Career decision guide

Should I resign before finding another job?

There is no universal rule that you must stay until you have another offer. The safer answer depends on how much runway you have and how credible your next route already is.

01

Measure runway

Use essential monthly spending, not optimistic spending. Add a buffer for a search that takes longer than expected.

02

Measure urgency

A difficult job and a harmful situation are not the same risk. The cost of staying matters too.

03

Measure route credibility

If you already convert into interviews, resigning carries a different risk from leaving before you know whether the market wants your profile.

04

Protect optionality

Notice periods, health insurance, references, bonuses and unused leave can change the timing economics.

A guide can frame the decision. Your actual context changes the answer.
